We are Wilton Youth Wrestling! We are a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization. Wilton Youth Wrestling is for boys and girls in grades 3 through 8 who are interested in the sport of wrestling. Our program is geared towards preparing our athletes for competition, but we are equally focused on character development, personal accountability, and the importance of physical fitness. In addition, we offer Junior Warrior Wrestling for children in grades 1-2, which is an introduction to the sport of wrestling with an emphasis on basic skills, movements, and games to teach the sport of wrestling.
WYW coaching staff is comprised of Coach Ted Young, Ray Ferranti, Jeff Siegel, Sean Dejager, CJ Sylvester, Terrence Reedy, David Goldman and Kris Kwait. All of the coaches have extensive competitive backgrounds in the sport. The club is sanctioned by USA Wrestling, and, as such, all coaches have undergone certification and background checks.
For grades 1-2: Junior Warrior practices are on Saturdays at 9-10 AM at the Wilton YMCA.
For grades 3-8: WYW practices are on Tuesday and Thursday 6:15pm (setup) - 8:15 pm (finish of breakdown) and Saturday's 10:00am - 11:30am at the Wilton YMCA. Practices combine technique instruction and drilling, wrestling games, and live wrestling.
A USA Wrestling membership card is required to participate. Visit www.usawmembership.com to purchase your membership. No wrestler will be allowed on the mat without a USA Wrestling Card. No Exceptions.
In addition to practices, we compete in dual, tri, and quad meets against other area clubs and participate in tournaments on the weekends in CT and NY. For new wrestlers only, please bring a copy of your birth certificate for the WYW's records, which is a USA Wrestling requirement.
The competition program is open to 3rd – 8th graders. No experience is necessary. The only special equipment required is wrestling shoes, though headgear is highly recommended. Any questions can be directed to Ted Young at
WHAT TO WEAR TO PRACTICE:
Come to practice in shorts and a T-shirt. The T-shirt should not be baggy, as it can cause injury to your training partners. Appropriate wear underneath the shorts are: jock, compression shorts, or briefs. BOXER SHORTS ARE NOT ALLOWED. Wrestling shoes are also required and can be purchased at Sports Authority or Wilton Sports. Headgear is required for competition and strongly encouraged for practice. It can also be purchased at local stores or online. While there is a water fountain in the gym, the wrestlers are encouraged to bring sufficient drink as the breaks are not long enough for all the boys to wait in line.
Uniform: Information concerning ordering for uniforms (singlets, in wrestling parlance) will be communicated at the beginning of the season.
